Montecito collector Charles Crail, son of LIFE magazine photographer Schuyler Crail, grew up in Hollywood. After finishing USC film school, he became a movie and then a network news cameraman. Covering the troubles of the ‘60s, though, made him miserable and therefore he quit. Probably as a rebellion to the misery and poverty he’d been filming, Crail found himself buying his first Rolls, a 1934 limousine used in Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. From there he pyramided his profits and scored his biggest coup in 1970 by purchasing Warner Brothers’ entire Rolls collection. At 33, he is the world’s most exclusive car salesman, operating from a small office above Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. His clientele flies in from all over the world to view his collection, vaulted away in a heavily secured subterranean garage. Most of the time, however, wheeler-dealer Crail himself is prowling the globe in search of new merchandise. ‘Finding an old rolls is just as exciting as finding a lost Rembrandt’, says Crail. ‘It’s the excitement of the find, not the money’.
