A superb grid of 27 Vintage Sports Car Club members took up the invitation from Castle Combe for their Autumn Classic on Saturday 7th October.

Despite the teeming rain the practice session saw all entrants complete at least three laps, apart from Mark Reece, whose MG J4 was to give him “issues” throughout the meeting. Pole sitter was Patrick Blakeney-Edwards by just over a second from Eddie Williams, both Frazer Nash mounted. Ten makes were represented within the race and with lap times spreading over some 37 seconds, the eleven laps promised plenty of overtaking and excitement, especially when paired with the continuing precipitation.

Once the grid had got away, the first excitement of the day was provided by Trevor Swete whose Invicta S-Type shed a wheel on the very first lap, a shame as he had qualified well to be on the fourth row of the grid. The rescue crew was onto the incident rapidly, however, and skilfully removed the stricken machine within barely a lap, typically first class work from the team at Castle Combe. The remaining quarter of an hour or so, once everyone had passed Trevor’s “moment” passed without any further issues and another VSCC “Formula Vintage” race was safely concluded.

Special mention must be made of John Guyatt and Leslie McAlpine whose skilled stewardship of the “Owner Driver Mechanic” strand to Formula Vintage continues to revive and strengthen The Club’s racing in its traditional form.
