American or Dutch? The Lincoln Body Mystery

1928-lincoln-lex-1
When in doubt, ask the experts! Dutch classic car dealer Lex van Lammeren has just acquired a fine 1928 Lincoln Model L Dual Cowl Phaeton. The Lincoln has a body tag that shows it was made by famous Dutch coach builder Schutter & van Bakel in Amsterdam. But to be honest, there is very little difference between with a factory supplied body. In fact the only difference we can spot is the rear of the hood which bends forward instead to the rear. We did find an advert by Schutter & van Bakel for a 1930 Lincoln which, apart from the rear end, also differs very little from the original. Any Lincoln expert out there who can tell us more about this practice or more specifically about chassis number 57919?
As can also be seen from the body tag, the Lincoln was originally imported into The Netherlands and especially built for a Mr. M. van Marwijk Kooy from De Bilt in Holland (pictured above with his family). The Lincoln was given the licence number L-3769. As it stayed in Holland until 1993, would it be possible to track down other owners of this magnificent Lincoln? Who can help? According to production records your chassis or "Lincoln Car No" 57919 was produced in 1929. Engine and chassis numbers used in 1929 were 54501 through 61699. Lift out the front seat on the passenger side of the car and look for a brass tag 1" x 2" in size attached to the seat riser. This is the "Body Type" tag. It will list the body builder (a two digit number) the Body Type (a three digit number and letter, and the body production number or sequence of production of this body type by the builder. Contact me and I may be able to tell you more about your Lincoln. Best Regards, David Clement

To add to the confusion the front bumper is from a 1931 Model K, a one year only design, bridging the Model L and the 1932 KB.

Lincoln cataloged the Locke dual cowl sport phaeton body as Style 163B. I suspect that Schutter & van Bakel may have also been a Lincoln dealer or distributor, and in this case any work they did on the body was quite minor.

editor: you are quite right Kit, Bas de Voogd informed me that Schutter & van Bakel also was reseller.

One thing is clear, the car on offer and in black and white photos has a radiator shell for 1929-30, not 1927-28.

Looks like a Locke body to me, but closer examination could reveal otherwise. Beautiful automobile.
