A friend of a friend of a friend Mystery.(Durkopp, Darracq , Napier, Wolseley?)

Attached photo of a ? pre 1914 british car?

Ray Miller is trying to identify the make and model of the fine open tourer depicted here. Ray adds: 'This has been sent to me by a Dutch friend, whose own friend wishes to know the information. It was taken in Holland in 1916 and he is almost certain that the car is British and was built pre-war.

If anybody can identify the car, it would be much appreciated!

Indeed, Andy, that's the car, a Dürkopp Knipperdolling. The radiator emblem on this car (a stylized D) however is not the same as the one on the old photograph, but can be seen on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Duerkopp_Automobilkarosserie_1902.JPG (this car seems to be dated somewhat too early, 1904 or 1905 is more likely).

I agree with Hubert. My initial thought was Siddeley-Deasey, but I seem to recall this make as having had a coffin shaped bonnet with the radiator on the firewall. Armstrong-Whitworth could be the best option. The mascot is definately a Sphinx. Napier's always tended to have the radiator forward of the front axle, which doesn't appear to be the case with this car.

Absolutely NOT a Napier. Wrong badge & no expansion tower to the radiator. Dumb irons also different.

... sold in the UK under the trademark of "Watsonia".. 4 cylinder cars from 14hp to 100hp. produced in Germany from 1898 until 1927

Having ruled out Wolseley-Siddeley and the Wolverhampton built Star which had a very similar radiator, but of course with a "star" rather than an "oval" motif, I'm convinced by that front axle and radiator that this is a Cottin-Desgouttes!

I suspect the car is a Napier, perhaps a 60 hp.
