Fifteen Maharajas on their way to Paris

1934 humber_snipe_landaulette_470

From 5th to 9th February Retromobile will feature a special section of 15 cars which belonged to Maharajas at one time. Three of the cars are Indian owned, a 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I, ex-Cooch Behar, stationed in the UK and a 1930 Delage D8 S, with Figoni body, ex-Holkar which took part in Pebble Beach two years ago and is set to return to India sometime soon, both these cars are owned by Dr. Ravi Prakash from Bangalore. And there is a 1934 Humber Snipe 80 Landaulette by Thrupp & Maberley ex-State of Korea, a small princely state located in Central India which belongs to our contributor Harit Trivedi from India. This car has been shipped all the way from India just for the show.

This Humber  is probably the only surviving one with this body style. When the car was purchased, Harit contacted the Humber club, PVHCC and they informed him that they were unaware of the existence of a Humber with this body style. There is a catalogue for the 1934 range of Humbers in which a Landaulette style is shown, fitted with a speaking tube a glass partition and two jump seats. A special book has been brought out by Gautam Sen describing all the cars being exhibited and is available for Euro 10 at the venue.

However for the record, your 1934 Pullman Landaulette is not the only surviving model of its kind. There is one more identical car located in Belgium, and it surprises me the people of the PVHCC are not aware of it, as it was owned by one of their members Willy Mol, who owned no less than 28 Humbers of the thirties. Willy Mol was also the spiritual father of the PVHCC'S Willy Mol trophy. I can confirm the car is still kept by Willy's family today.

Seeing the photograph of your landaulette however does bring back some nice memories. Because I had the pleasure of driving Willy's Landaulette, and some of his other cars, on several occasions. Thank you for showing your landaulette

Regards,

Bruno,
