It is the year 1938 and you can afford yourself an extravagant car

What if... it is the year 1938. This is the year that Adolf Hitler is Time magazine's "Man of the Year" as the most influential person of the year. The year of Kristallnacht and the annexation of Sudetenland by Germany. But also the year....

....that American tire manufacturer Harvey Firestone and German racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer died. The birth year of Robert Jankel, British coachbuilder. The year that steam locomotive Mallard sets the world speed record for steam by reaching 125.88 mph on the London and North Eastern Railway and Howard Hughes sets a new record by completing a 91-hour airplane flight around the world. Orson Welles' radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds is broadcasted, causing panic in various parts of the United States.

You yourself are a flamboyant playboy and have just inherited a small fortune from the uncle you never knew you had, enough to buy yourself an extravagant sports car. Which options do you have?

First you have to pick a rolling chassis. Do you fancy something British? A Bentley? Something Italian, like an Alfa Romeo? Or do you prefer the French way? Then there is plenty to choose from: Delahaye, Delage, Bugatti, Talbot-Lago or Hispano-Suiza?

Second is to pick a coachbuilder. The list of possible coachbuilders is long, very long.

May be it is more efficient to let you choose from my shortlist of five beautiful cars:

1. Saoutchik Hispano-Suiza H6C Dubonnet Xenia 1938
2. Pourtout Bentley 4 1/4 Ltr Coupe Embiricos 1938
3. Figoni & Falaschi Delahaye 165 Cabriolet 1938
4. Figoni & Falaschi Talbot Lago T150 C SS Teardrop Coupe 1938
5. Touring Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B 'Lungo' Berlinetta 1938

Which one do you choose? Let us know in the comments!

The Embiricos Bentley is just magnificent! And I agree that the late 30s produced some of the most beautiful cars of all time.
