Penny in Egypt

Penny in Egypt By Mahmouth Ezzeldin: "On day 9 the participants of the London to Cape Town rallye arrived by boat in Alexandria, Egypt. Here awaited them a tough trial through the Egyptian desert. Penny, the 1923 Vauxhal OD 23/60 driven by the Australians Max & James Stephenson, did well and is now on its way to Kenya. Max, the driver, told me that if he arrives in Cape Town and Penny is a in good state, he plans to drive it back all the way to London, and I shall be having the honors of hosting them during their stay in Egypt."

Max drove for one long 14 hour day... and then they worked out that James could drive while Max pressed the clutch in. I think they are trying to fix the hand throttle on their rest day in Nairobi today. We'll see how that goes.

A good Vauxhall 23/60 this, well suited for long and tough driving. But why put on these very smoth tyres made for good roads when driving in Africa from Alexandria to Cape? Not surprising they got stuck in the sand...

The Rally entered Egypt at the port of Alexandria on the 8th, and the day's drive was from Alexandria to Ain Sokhna (360 KM)
On the 9th of Jan the Rally had 420 KM to drive from Ain Sokhna to Safaga's port. The day included 3 world cup sections, with plenty of soft sand for everyone.

Actually, Max's son James is doing most of the driving but Max has taken over since the hand throttle broke. James needs a hand thrrottle as he only has one leg.
