About # 168 : Stoddard-Dayton 1906

The give-aways in quiz 168 are the fenders and of course the characteristic radiator. Apparently the designing is so clearly distinguishable form all other Stoddard's, that we had no less than three competitors who had matching answers for make, year and type. We take our hat of for these gentlemen (Robert McAnlis, David Miller, David Brownell), as it must be a long time back that any one of them saw a 1906 Stoddard Dayton parked along the sidewalk. And then saying without any hesitations that it is a 1906 D-type... It gave us the unpleasant task to take up our old hobby of detail nitty gritting. Instead of taking all the guilt for on our shoulders we asked a few wise men to help us judge. So we asked Lars-Göran Lindgren, David Greenlees, Mark Dawber and Kit Foster to assist us in this. Based on their advises we decided to filter out added information which is easily to be found in the Standard Catalogue or Georgano as soon you decide (or gamble) that it is a 1906 Stoddard. So figures about wheelbase, production figures, the slogan "as good as it looks" etc. dropped out. In the end it always comes down to recognising the car... and knowing why, because this shows that you didn't gamble! Winner with a quarter of a noselength difference compared to his co-competitors:"...its turned-up leading edges on the front fenders and the little accents on the radiator shell, which would be a trademark during the car's years of production from 1905 to 1913." Congratulations David Brownell ! Meet David at
