About quiz # 180.... Hupmobile 1929 Century 8

The disc wheels were the 'give-away' in last weeks hard to guess car. Like Kit Foster said: "It just goes to show how much we rely on the radiator or grille to identify cars. I found I needed every piece of the car I could see in the photo plus the hints in order to zero in on it, and even now the wheels and cowl lamps leave a bit of mystery." Several competitors were misled by the Packard look-a-like disc wheels which were a new (?) option of Hupmobile that year. Peter Pegg cut through the Swedish mists and was right on target except for the year: "This looks like a Hupmobile Century Eight fitted with the disc wheel option, rather than wire wheels." Congratulations Peter! (photos Jan Gauffin, Sweden) Here the description of the man who owns the car since 1960 !! : "This is my Hupmobile Model M Century 8 Deluxe 1929. The car now has wire wheels instead of the artillery wheels on the old photo. According to the Hupp brochure this model should have wire wheels as standard. The artillery wheels was a custom order. The draw back with the artillery wheels was that if you wanted to adjust the brakes, you had to take off the wheels. The black sided (disc) wheels on the old photo was new then. Those 6 tires lasted 54.000 km and in 1984 I bought the 6 white sided. The Hupp has taken us on many long trips to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany, England, Scotland and Norway. The only trouble we have had on these trips was a broken door lock and an oil leak on right rear brake."
