About Quiz # 186. Packard Chriskraft II

The cooling down quiz brought in a handfull expert opinions. Jurymembers Paul Linster even found the exact advert where we took the picture from. Mark Dawber made a fine analysis bringing him very-very close to the exact answer. Despite the fact that we had expected the winner to come from the US, the bullseye answer came from Stefan Ittner, who recognised the boats from his literature! Stefan writes: "you chose two fine old speedboats, both powered by Packard engines (V12, type 1M-1242), good for 60+ mph. The occasion most probably is the 3rd Detroit Sweepstakes, 6 September 1925, won by Colonel J.G. Vincent in the white "Packard Chriscraft II". The speedboat in the background is "Baby Horace III, with C. Bragg at the controls, he placed second. The Packard engine was the hottest thing for speedboats back then, as recounted by Robert Neal in his splendid book
Packards at Speed. (WeakForcePress.com)." Now the second boat is a bit of speculating (but 95 % certain at the same time), but even if that part would be totally wrong, the first part of the answer is more than good enough on its own to bring Stefan the price. Congratulations! More about the 1925 Detroit Regatta at
