About Quiz # 214 1908 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 1

Too easy for this bunch of old car cracks? As if it is was a Model T the Isotta answers kept gulping in... Richard Armstrong, Sujit Gupta(IN), Josef Kubista(CZ), Ole Kristian Haugenn(N), Hugh Nutting (USA) Jean-Marie Gillen (L), Stephen Walker (AU), Henry Smith (UK) ; they all came up with the right make of car, but... one needed more, much more to be a winner this time! No less than seven competitors came up with all perfect bits in a different order and with different selections. They had the years right the type, the driver
Vincenzo Trucco, the mechananic, all hi-tech details and some also gave details about the relation with Lorraine Dietrich. Applause to this group of second to best players Jonathan Baker, Ivan Saxton, Stefan Ittner, Heinzgard Schott, Graeme Simpson Roger Fields. However - in our view - one competitor was better than all others. His answer in very compact style had everything plus an extra bonus nobody else had:"The car is an Isotta Frachini Tipo 1 Targa Florio 1908, 50 HP Based on the Type FO 40/45 HP, part of a group of projects designed for French group Lorraine-Dietrich, with which Isotta Fraschini had signed a shareholding agreement on April 4th, 1907. Four cylinders, cast in pairs bore 130 mm, stroke 150 mm, 7964 cc T-Head Chain drive Wins at Brescia and Targa Florio (Vincenzo Trucco and as a riding mechanic Alfieri Maserati) 1908 Also wins at Bridgeport, Connecticut by A.J. Poole, May 1908." With this last detail about the US racing the gap between Italy and the US marketing succes is closed. Maybe this 1908 victory formed the basis the later commercial succes of IF in America. Congratulations to Sébastien Simon from Switzerland !!! The car is in the permanent exposition of Nagoya based
Toyota Museum. (our special thanks to Marc Fellman who made and sent the photos)
