Quiz ArchiveAbout quiz #216
1928 Rugby M-2
(see Update) Promise. We will never say again that we think a quiz is difficult. Last week’s quiz flooded our mail-box with solutions. We even think it could be a record. However, many of you took one glance at the distinctive grille and came up with the name Durant. That would have been too easy, wouldn’t it? We realize it’s difficult to name a car from a pile of rubbish; still a lot of participants -including Jurymembers José A. Gómez, Hans Compter, Lars-Göran Lindgren, John Barringer and Roger Fields- correctly identified it as Rugby. It was a copy of the 1928 Durant Star and built for export in Elizabeth, New Jersey. According to Jurymember Kit Foster the body number falls in the range for early 1928 (confirmed by the "E" prefix) as does the model M-2. The name Star couldn’t be used for export as that was already licensed to the British made Star. Several of you found the excellent website about Durant and its related brands, though many failed to mention the Model of the Rugby. After a lot of weeding, we were left with only one very complete answer: that of Hugh Nutting from Montana, who had all the details correct. Congratulations Hugh with your first win! The T-shirt will be on its way. (RB)
Update by John Hearne who says: "(the name) Rugby was a bit of a marketing ploy to sell to countries who play real football such as Australia, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa." (Editor RB: please let's not start a discussion what is 'real' football and what is not :-) Friday, 30 November 2007
