About Quiz # 227: 1938 Mercedes-Benz 320 Autobahn-Kurier

Again this was the kind of quiz that either you knew the answer or you didn’t. All contestants had the make right, Mercedes-Benz, but there the trouble started. It was neither a 540 nor a 340, it was the 320 of which the basic model was made from 1937 till 1938 in 3.2 litre form and from 1938 until 1942 as 3.4 litre. Our 320 was the 1938 3.4 litre Stromlinien-Limousine. However, we asked its nickname which was “Autobahn-Kurier” or “Motorway-Courier”. After discarding the answer of Karel Vermeer who said: “I know the Mercedes, but cannot remember the legs," we were left with three correct answers: Ingo Jost; Chris Haas and Heinzgerd Schott all had make, model, year and nickname correct. In making the final decision we choose Heinzgerd’s answer. He wrote many little details about the car, such as the official model and engine designations (W142IV and M142II) but the clincher was his remark that the Autobahn-Kurier was designed after the ideas of streamline-pioneers Paul Jaray and Freiherr Koenig-Fachsenfeld. Congratulations Heinzgerd on your first win! (photos courtesy Daimler AG) (RB)
