About quiz 251 Ford Dagenham

We were expecting more, but all 14 answers that came in were correct in identifying the factory as Ford UK-plant at Dagenham, Essex. Last month its 80th birthday was celebrated. On May 17, 1929 Henry Ford’s son Edsel, was the first to dig into the low-lying marsh which the company had bought for £167,700. Ford Dagenham took 28 months to build and the first vehicle to roll of the line was a Model AA truck, in October 1931. Special trains moved 2,000 Ford employees and their families to their new Dagenham homes from Trafford Park, Manchester – the company's first UK plant. Another model that was produced in Dagenham was Model Y, the lowest priced saloon ever made, with the Popular model introduced in 1935 being the first and only £100 car. Choosing a winner from all those correct answers proved difficult as many of you found the official Ford press release and quoted from that. So we decided that this week’s prize should go to Stuart Tallack who added a personal observation: “I remember a school visit in the fifties. We were meant to be inspired to become junior management, but it was no New Jerusalem. With Becton gas works and rumoured sewage pollution anywhere downstream of Woolwich that part of the river was vile.” Congratulations Stuart!
