About Quiz # 263: 1914 RCH

Almost all answers we received correctly identified our quiz car as an RCH, made by the RCH Corporation in Detroit, USA (1912-1915). In 1909 Robert Craig Hupp started the Hupp Motor Car Company that produced the well known Hupmobile. Due to an internal dispute, he left the company in 1911 to start a new business and presented the RCH in 1912. (The story is similar to those of Harry C. Stutz - HCS; Ransom E. Olds - REO and Harry A. Lozier – HAL... thanks Kit!). Almost all of the correct answers we received said it was a 1913 model, only Chris Paulsen came close, as he had serious doubts whether it was a 1913 or 1914 model. But it was Ian Hayhurst who accurately identified our quiz car as a 1914 model because of its steel radiator shell and - more visible - the absence of cowl lights, as they were discontinued for the 1914 model year. So congratulations to you, Ian, on your third win with which you now join the ranks of our distinguished jury members. (With thanks to Göran Flank for the photo and Kit Foster for additional information. More about RCH (especially the 1913 model) can be found on this website; special thanks to Rich Carroll). The picture was taken at Strandvägen 7c in Stockholm, where the company Gjestvangs started in 1903 as one of the first car dealers in Sweden with cars such as Benz, Hudson, Ford, Oldsmobile, Vivinus and lesser known makes as RCH and Regal.
