Quiz ArchiveAbout Quiz # 266: Turcat-Méry Type UG The first to react on last weeks quiz with a correct answer was jurymember Peter Ransom. But he had it easy as he lives only a few kilometers from the owner of the driving chassis! The shiny engine is a Turcat-Méry being restored by Jak Guyomar in Australia. It has a 4-seater Tourer body thought to be by Smith & Waddington of Sydney. The engine photo shows it when it moved for the first time under it's own power since 1948. The restoration is progressing well; the fenders are done and Jak is about to seriously start on the body. It must have been a difficult engine to recognize as only a few answers came in. Apart from Peter Ransom, it was also identified by jurymember Marc Fellman from Australia and Frans van Stee from Holland. But this week’s winner is Jean Pierre Becret from France who supplied the most complete information: “This is a Turcat-Méry type UG Sport dating from 1925/26; 2390cc overhead camshaft. A fast car at 120km/h.” Well done Jean Pierre! The T-shirt will be sent to you shortly. See ‘Read More’ for more information about the Turcat-Méry Jury member Marc Fellman wrote: “Turcat-Méry was a company with a history that goes back to the dawn of the automobile. Brothers-in-law Léon Turcat and Simon Méry produced their own prototype in 1896 after experimenting with Peugeots and Panhards. Active early on in motor sport a Turcat-Méry driven by Henri Rougier won the inaugural Monte Carlo Rally in 1911. Like many small regional French manufacturers of quality automobiles the company lurched through financial crises in the decade of the twenties until production ceased in 1928.” Friday, 22 January 2010
