About Quiz # 276: Le Zèbre Type A "Monocylindrique" (UPDATE: a Second Survivor)

Le Zèbre Type A MonocylindriqueLast weeks’ Quiz Car was by many recognized as a French made Le Zèbre. But here the trouble started as its looks are very much pre-WW1. The single cylinder Type A was introduced in 1909. Production stopped in 1917 but due to popular demand it was restarted again in 1920 and lasted until 1923. This model was known as the `Type A Monocylindrique" and differed only from the original "A " in that the slightly wider chassis of the Type C was used (track 1.1 meter and Type A had 1m track). Our Quiz Car is owned by Hans Compter from New-Zealand and it is the only known surviving "Type A Monocylindrique" in the world. This was confirmed by Le Zèbre historian Philip Schram in 1996 and again last year, although some of you mentioned that there are reports of a second survivor. We would like to see proof of that! Those of you who identified our Quiz Car correctly as a Le Zèbre are mentioned under ‘Read More’ but we had to be very strict in judging as we also asked for the exact model. Oliver Indermaur and Mario Montanaro came very close, but they named it a “Monocylindre”, which should really be “Monocylindrique”. Therefore the winner this time is Greame Simpson, who mentioned all we wanted to know. Congratulations Graeme, the T-shirt  is on the way!

The other correct answers came from:

John Turner
Dion Coleman
Luk Martens
Patrick Jacob
Oliver Indermaur
Mario Montanaro
Glen Robb

Reg Harris (Jury)

There is apparently a second Monocylindrique . Click "Le Zebre historian Philip Schram" above, Click Le Zebre emblem, click "Le Zebre photo gallery", scroll down to "Monocylindrique " click the Quiz car and click blue car for its album. This car has an earlier chassis No. than the Quiz car. Note also Pre-restoration photo.
