About Quiz # 279: 1935 Volvo P36

volvo_1935_PV36_photoBW_320Despite the lack of visual information and minimum of hints, we had a few very good answers. First we offer you a full view of the Carioca remains as presented by Volvo in Essen, Germany this spring.
Correct or almost correct were Howard Morgan, recent winner James Helms and jury member Kit Foster. However we're always looking for the very best answer. And there was no way to go round the most complete answer of Adrian Pascu-Tulbure. Congratulations! See also Volvo's own description. (colour photos by editor)

Adrian wrote: "Had not heard about this project before but I believe it is a Volvo. It looks to have a split windscreen, in which case we are looking at a Chrysler Airflow-lookalike Volvo PV 63 "Carioca" (*), made between 1935 and in 1938 in 501 examples. Engine is a 3670cc six cylinder developing 80 bhp and propelling the streamlined body to 120 kph. The Carioca was a fashionable dance (youtube) in 1930s Sweden, but sadly the car was less so, perhaps due to a combination of its 8500 kronor cost price and "controversial" styling. The Carioca was the work of Ivan Ornberg who had been headhunted by Volvo in 1932 from Hupmobile - hence the American looks."

(*) 63 must of course be 36, thanks for spotting our typo, Ced.

Didn't you mean PV 36 not 63 ? A nit-pick, I know !
