About Quiz # 281: 1913 Protos G2 8/21 PS Doppelphaeton

protos-1913-281-1We photographed this Protos when it was exhibited by Car Classics Berlin during the 2009 Techno Classica Essen, but we were not the only ones. Several of you recognized it from the show, although in 2006 it had already been advertised at PreWarCar. And if you didn’t see it in Essen or at PreWarCar our clue about the make’s second place in the 1908 New York to Paris race was a sure give-away. This time we had to be strict in weighing the answers, so we wanted to hear from you the full description of this car which is “Protos G2 8/21 PS Doppelphaeton”. Also any answers that did not observe to the rules were ignored. In the end we chose as winner David Miller (from the USA?) for his complete and concise story. Congratulations, David with your first win! See Read More for David’s answer and the names of who correctly identified the Protos.

The answer by David Miller: “During the First World War, this 1913 Protos G2 8/21PS Doppelphaeton was used by the Austro-Hungarian Army, then abandoned near Krakow. It was adopted by a Polish businessman who only used it for special occasions. The car survived during the Second World War only to surface in Communist Poland, where a ban on private vehicles led to its conversion into a fire truck. In the 1950’s the car returned to the son of the previous owner, who began reconstructing the body. After the fall of the Soviet Union, and the son’s death, it landed in the hands of a collector.”
