About Quiz # 282: 1929 Praga Piccolo

praga-piccolo-282-1Our clues about last week’s quiz car were not difficult and many found the right make: Praga. However, one small clue was the word “small” and this should have brought you to the model ‘Piccolo’ (Italian for small) and not the larger model ‘Alfa’. Our quiz car was made in 1929, although that was more difficult to spot as it seems to have a later model grille. This didn’t fool our jury members Lars-Göran Lindgren and Josef Kubišta, thus we choose as winner James Helms for his very precise answer (see Read More). Congratulations, James, with your second win! Special mention must go to Ruud de Pater, who not only identified the Praga, but also the one next to it as another Piccolo, although a more luxurious one. These are two of the three known Piccolo’s in Holland. See you all next week with another quiz!

James Helms: “This automobile is a 1929 Praga Piccolo with a 995cc side valve engine. Introduced at the 1924 Prague Auto Salon with a 707cc four cylinder, displacement was increased to 856cc in 1926 and 995cc in 1928. The Piccolo was available in 1932 with a new 2.5 inch wider body. 1931 saw merger discussions with Skoda and Tatra, but Tatra withdrew before the January 1932 start date. It was a short lived merger which benefited Skoda, but not Ceskomoravska-Kolben-Danek (Praga). Postwar, Praga, no longer a private company, was directed to manufacture trucks and buses.”
