About Quiz # 286: 1938 GAZ GL-1
We warned you last week that things aren't what they look like at first sight, so our racing quiz car wasn't an Auburn or a Ford despite the look-a-like grille. However, that thought isn't strange as our quiz car is the Russian made GAZ GL-1, based on the GAZ M-1 saloon car, which was a close relative of mr. Ford 's idea. Correct answers came in from Eduard Macepura, Ivars Dortans, Thilo Moerke, Leonid Kuznetsow, Andrzej Jakubaszek and jury member Josef Kubišta. From these we decided that Ivar should be the winner as he mentioned both the designer and the driver of the Gaz GL-1. Congratulations Ivar with your first win. The T-shirt will be on its way to Latvia. See Read More for his Ivar's answer and a picture of the second -streamlined- version of this racing car.

Ivars Dortans: "This is GAZ GL-1 built by Russian car maker GAZ in 1938 and designed by Evgenie Agitov. It was based on GAZ M-1 chassis with 4 cylinder engine boosted to 65 hp instead of original 50 hp. The GL-1 debuted in Kiev in October 1938. Driven by GAZ test technician Arkady Nikolaev, the car was able to reach a top speed of 147.84 kph. Later in 1940 this car was upgraded with GAZ-11 6 cylinder engine and redesigned with new style grill plus bubble roof mounted over the driver's compartment to improve the aerodynamics. With this upgrades in 1940 GAZ GL-1 second version became to the fastest car of the Soviet Union and reached 161.9 kph."
