Quiz ArchiveAbout Quiz # 289: 1930 Derby L1 K4 Cruiser When last week we asked you to identify the shoes, we truly though no one would take up the challenge. Wow, were we wrong! We’ve seen names like Lacroix, Blanik, Louboutin and even Derby (!). In fact they were designed by famous Dutchman Jan Jansen (pictured here at InterClassics & TopMobiel 2010). Many were correct in naming our quiz car a Derby, but only Roberto Marenzi came up with all the answers, including the reason why it was named a Derby -a sporting connection- and he also identified the Jan Jansen shoes. Found by Serge Pozzoli at Yvelines in 1950s. For years at Le Mans Museum. Auctioned 2007 Retromobile. Etablissements Bertrand Montet, engineering company founded 1912. After WWI built Harley Davidson powered cyclecars. Later cars with 4, 6 and V8 engines, first Chapuis-Dornier, later C.I.M.E. Derby chosen because of sport connection. In England, Vernon Derby. After Montet’s death, bought by Wallace Douglas Hawkes, made front wheel drive model and Derby Miller racer. Closed in 1936 after financial problems and strikes. Around10 Derby survive.
