Quiz ArchiveAbout Quiz # 291: 1929 DeSoto Six Model K 'Sedan de Lujo' There weren't many visual clues for our mystery vehicle in Quiz 291. The most prominent and important was the pattern of the hood louvres (click main pic for side view). Four readers, however, correctly identified it as a 1929 DeSoto 6, which was, as our description hinted, the introductory year for the marque. Jury member Peter Ransom adds that it's a Model K, like all other 1929 DeSotos, and Allistair Smith and jury member Mark Dawber elaborate on our hint about repositioning, that initially it competed directly with brother marque Dodge in the Chrysler Corporation catalogue and was moved upmarket as a result. Nobody noted that the sedan was "luxurious" because DeSoto adopted a Latin theme for the 1929 body styles. The four-door sedan, from which this pickup was built, was called "Sedan De Lujo," Spanish for "Deluxe Sedan".It was Grant Taylor, however, who told us something we didn't know when we set up the puzzle. The cap on the home-built radiator is from a 1925 Studebaker Standard Six. So to Grant we send our prize, and to all who entered we send our thanks. See you all next week with another quiz or, if you can’t wait that long, try your hand at our Post-war “Simple-Quiz”! (With our thanks to Kit Foster) Saturday, 05 February 2011
