About Quiz # 295: Burney Streamline

burney-295-1Lots of answers this time and all correct in identifying last week’s tail end as that of the Burney Streamliner. Most knew the name of the designer, Sir Charles Dennistoun Burney, and how many were made (12, or 13 if you include the prototype, but none survive). The number of and diversity of the engines proved more difficult, but still left us with many correct answers. So we had to rely on the extra information given. Several mentioned that Sir Charles was involved with the Vickers R-100 airship; others mentioned that The Prince of Wales owned one (whatever happened to that car?), Robbie Marenzi even gave us the licence plate (RX 7014), but in the end we elected as winner John Robins for his short and to the point answer that included a break-down of the number of engines. Well done, John! Please go to ‘Read More’ for his answer plus the names of all other entrants that correctly identified the Burney. See you all next week with a new quiz!

(With thanks to Carrick Watson for the idea and photos)

John Robins: “The Burney Streamline designed by Sir Charles Dennistoun Burney. Prototype No 1 was assembled at the airship station in Howden, Yorkshire, in 1928 and used a reversed Alvis 12/75 engine and chassis with the steering locked, and a steering axle added in front. 12 production cars were made at the Jam Factory in Maidenhead, Berks. 9 had a 3 litre Beverley straight 8, 2 had the Armstrong-Siddeley 20 hp six, and one had a Lycoming straight 8. The patents were bought by Crossley in 1933 and about 25 cars were made using their 2 litre engine.”
