About Quiz # 298: (upd. W. S. Truck Michigan). No winner!
Quiz #298 appears a total mystery. We had only 1 (ONE!) response. A man named Dieter wrote this engine is very similar to a 1917 Decoulange he has in his possession. However so far we have not received a photo from him to proove his point. That aside we have - besides from Dieter - found nobody who even heard of the make Decoulange. Do you? We asked French expert Fons Alkemade and veteran & vintage expert Malcolm Jeal for advise and they are puzzled as well. They hinto German and aero direction, but for the moment we keep the details the mentioned on our desk. Furthermore we give you another weekend to come up with an answer. Here once more the dimensions: most probably made around 1910, give it a few years. Total length 88cm. Flywheel diameter 30 cm. Cylinder height 27 cm. Number on cylinders 7321. Number on block 1020. Number on valve covers: 30219. The carburettor is a Pallas. Height of radiator 66 cm. Width 50 cm.
UPDATE II by Malcolm Jeal: W.S. (USA) Petrol Com. Veh -- W.S. Truck Co., 110, Brownwell st, Birmingham, Michigan
The source is an English period publication called 'The Red Book' which began annual publication c. 1912, just covering car makes with very brief specifications and prices. The above information is from the 1920 edition (the last one produced I think) which has hundreds of pages and covers cars, motorcycles, engines, aeroplanes, marine engines etc 'An Alphabetical List of International Motors'. The details (such as they are) are exactly as printed.
UPDATE: sender of the photos in the end found markings on the cylinders saying W&S Trucks. Anybody who has info of this make of truck engine?
