About Quiz # 328: Thomas Built Buses

thomas-bus-328-1We thought that this would be a very easy quiz, as millions of American kids must have ridden this bus to school and back home. Yet only five answers! Sandy Sanders and Manuel Voyages ventured a guess at Bluebird and Ford. Alas, no! Only three jury members -Kit Foster, Stuart Penketh and Fried Stol- came up with the right answer. Kit explains: "Well of course it would be a Thomas school bus. The Perley A. Thomas Car Works, makers of street cars, went into the school bus business in 1936, a market in which, as the Thomas Built Buses subsidiary of Freightliner LLC, it current holds a very large share. I see them every (school) day. From 1956 to 1960, I rode to school on a Thomas bus on a 1956 Ford B750 chassis. Not surprisingly, most Thomas Built Buses are now on Freightliner chassis." Stuart added: "New Orleans is one of the few cities where Perley A. Thomas streetcars can still be found in active service."
Sorry, no winner this time. We wish you more luck next week.
