About Quiz #413: 1925 Gobron 8 CV

About quiz_413_gobron-470

One more time our readers have surprised us with their knowledge level. We found this interesting photo in an old 1920s newspaper, and the only data we already knew were the marque, Gobron, the date of build and a few technical specifications about its engine. The magazine described this vehicle as fitted with a supercharged in-line four cylinder (65x100) and a four speed gearbox. The compressor brand is unknown (Cozette?). The answers this time went in various directions: Benjamin with Chapuis-Dornier engine, Talbot 14/45, LG (?), Georges Irat 4A and Chenard Walcker 1500.
The right answer was sent this time by our earlier winner Korneel VanRemoortel, who told us "Could it be a Gobron? Far removed from the weird and wonderful pre-war opposed-piston engined Gobron-Brillié’s made in Boulogne-sur-Seine. Post-war they moved to Levallois-Perret and first tried to offer a monstrous 6-cylinder vehicle (4.071cc), quickly replaced by smaller cars with a simple pushrod 4 cylinder of 69x100mm (1.496cc) reduced in 1925 to 65x100mm (1.323cc) for tax reasons. They tried to market them as Stabilia too. Eventually there was a supercharged side-valve racing version (designed by Cuminato, first solo trombone player at the Opera de Paris)". Very curious history! As you may know we like to hear about those details that are unknown to us. And more in this case, with very few comparable examples (perhaps only this period advert). So congratulations Korneel! To claim your PreWarCar T-shirt, just send us your size and address.
