Quiz ArchiveUpdate I , II , III What is it? (8) UPDATE III; extensive research on this car has been done (and still going on) by Jeroen and Holger Merten. See their full story: Last of the Auto Unions? (8W.forix.com).
UPDATE II by Roger Vardey of the Donington Grand Prix Collection: The photo of the Sokol 650 is not in the Donington Grand Prix Collection, we suggest that it is a hybrid of the D and E type Auto Union. The E type was planned for 1940/41 but was never finished due to the 2nd world war. We suggest the Sokol used many major components from the unfinished E type Auto Union. An example of which can be seen in the Donington Grand Prix Collection. This car became known as the DAMW Postwar. Click to ENLARGE. Last weekends question was a real Russian riddle. Possibly of great historical importance. Auto Union was the obvious answer, BUT: 'It is the racing automobile 'Sokol 650', which was made in Germany, 1945 by the joint-stock company 'AVTOVELO' (BMW Eisenach) of the left over spare parts of great German racing automobiles such as C, D of the firm AUTO UNION.' Original text with the photo was : 'Stalin's Falcons'. A team of military USSR pilots ready for the first competion after the war.' Editor: Could this be the car from the Donington collection that is thought to be a real Auto Union? Earlier T-shirt competition text: It's far from what you might think it is. In fact it is almost not a proper question to ask. So we don't expect you to be exact. The answer that's coming close to the truth, is good enough to us.
