What is it? # 130 UPDATE: Cadillac Square, Detroit & 1896 King)

Update: An all American Automotive Monument and Historical Site and not one American who recognised it... : a town in the early twenties with lots of cars, not too many towns to which the picture applies. When making the quiz we already stumbled over the same landscape but then photographed in 1899 (Rootsweb.com): 'Cadillac Square', . Jurymember Henk Visscher added to this: "...viewing west toward the old Pontchartrain Hotel (demolished) and the old City Hall (demolished)." Shame on the City Council of Detroit, the square is an automotive monument as you will agree with us after reading the next few lines. The 'lonesome' car to which we refer is the first car ever to drive through the streets of Detroit: 1896 King (Detroithistorical.com) Jurymember Henk Visscher adds here: "On March 6, 1896 King and his mechanic Oliver Barthel tested this car in the streets of downtown Detroit. On Cadillac Square the vehicle experienced engine trouble. (Three months later, on June 4, Henry Ford drove his Quadricycle through Detroit, but probably not along Cadillac Square)" Best answer that came in from the Competitors was by the team Booy/De Voogd who after months of struggle finally reached Jury status. They came up with the right Square. That was enough to win. One other competitor was right with the 1896 King, but he did not come up with the right Square. Congratulations Rutger & Bas! See you all next Saturday. With a plain, simple car ;-) (postcard collection editor) EARLIER TEXT:It's a big city parking. We have seen a photo made in 1899 showing the same spot with considerably less cars. Yet, that was not the beginning. Even a few years before that, a lonesome car was puffing around in this area. Two questions 1. Which square are we looking at? 2. Which lonesome car are we talking about? Luckily both questions have a clear answer. So either you win or you don't. If we have one winner, you'll get the PreWarCar vest. If we have more then one winner, it will be the PreWarCar badge. One extra question (we probbaly will not count it in): in the sea of cars (click the photo detail) you can see the rear end of an roadster (or tractor?) with double (!) rear wheels. At least, it looks a bit like that. Any ideas what it can be?
