Quiz ArchiveWhat is it ? # 143 BOB Automobil Gesellschaft You gave us an easy job this time. Two jurymembers came up with the right marque. And one (1) competitor came up with the right make. Congratulations Trygve Krogsaeter !!! This is what he wrote:"It must be a German car, made only for a few years, I think 1921 and 1922. So, that should be answer on the question you do not ask. Second, the name with American sound. Well, Bob, bob, daddy, daddy , bob, bob sue... is a popular American child's song. So my suggestion is BOB! P.S. A friend of mine owns one. " (ahh, now we understand...) (Yes it is a BOB indeed, made by the Bob Automobil-Gesellshaft. The weight of the car was (according to the firewal plate: 500 kg), so in short a cyclecar. We still don't know what the name BOB is an abbreviation of. Hans Compter writes about that: "The term "bob", as in a bouncy and jerky movement, indeed has a relative recent American origin (see bob-cart, bob-cat, and bob-sleigh), but I don't think that the makers of this light German car had that (later) meaning in mind........ An even better export name to guarantee zero-sales would have been "The Jerk" ! Incidentally around the turn of the last century there also existed a French light flat-twin motorcycle called 'Le Bob'. " (photo from collection Nils Petter Nanielsen) EARLIER TEXT: It is not a French car... As all the Gallic oriented experts are in Paris now, we thought it wiser to do something totally different. This photo was shot around 1934 and is showing two aunts of one of our Norwegian visitors. Except for the photo and the ID-plate (which we'll show you later next week ;-) nothing is left. Written under the photo is that this is concerning a "10 HP". When you click the image you'll get a better view on the black diamond facetted radiator. Now what make do we have here? (question 1) The year we don't know, so we are not going to ask you. But give us an estimate on the weight (question 2). A last fat hint, the makename is a three letter word with a very American sound to it. Anyone who knows if these three letters form an abbreviation? Of what? (question 3).
