Quiz ArchiveWhat is it ? # 148 (Update: 1937 protype type 30 for a Volkswagen) UPDATE:Never trust the editor...
As Jury Member Henk Visscher wrote us:
"If the Editor took the photo, #148 is not a genuine pre-1945 car. All 29 (!) original cars were scrapped in 1942." So in fact you were all looking at a Replica.... Sorry, but we were not aware of this when we made the quiz. It is also the reason why we will give two prizes. 1. To the competitor with the most correct description of the original car. 2. To the competitor with the correct description of the Replica. making decisions on this seemingly easy quiz would have been impossible without the great help of Henk Visscher, Rutger Booy and Bas de Voogd. Let's start at the first mentioning of 'Volkswagen(s)' At Volkswagen .de you can find: "Am 28. Mai 1937 wird die "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" gegründet, und am 16. September 1938 in "Volkswagenwerk GmbH" umbenannt." From here to the Quiz: (The Make) question 1. A marque is the name under which a certain product is marketed. As this car was not yet on the market there were different project names but not a marque to be precise. The word Volkswagen did exist in the above mentioned GeZuVor.We idn't want to say 'NO' to the name Volkswagen as being 'the make' but decided that Prototype with reference to VW or Volkswagen would be more appropriate. (The Manufacturer) question 2. The Manufacturer was in 1937 : Daimler-Benz HOWEVER as Henk Visscher concluded:"....when the editor took the photo, the car was not made prior to 1945..." This because ALL Type 30 cars were scrapped in 1941. (The Year) question 3. That was not the problem this time: 1937 No less then 24 (!) competitors & jury members were correct. (The Type) question 4 : type 30 Three competitors were best in describing the original car: Bas van Genderen, Stuart Penketh, Antonin Prochazka, Marc Hendrix. They will all receive the PreWarCar badge. BUT, as stated above in fact this was a Replica, more precise in the words of Henk Visscher: 1. Replica of the 1937 test-series of the 'People's Car' designed by Dr.-Ing. hc Ferdinand Porsche GmbH, Stuttgart, and build by Daimler-Benz AG, Sindelfingen (the marque Volkswagen or KdF-Wagen didn't exist in 1937). 2. Technische Restaurationen Werner Zinke GmbH, Zwvnitz (Saxony). 3. 2002. 4. Replica of VW 30 'Sedan' (all 29 original cars were scrapped in 1942). See www.amag.ch for more photos of the replica. Bart Van den Bosch (NL) and Nicolas Van Frausum (B) were the only two who came up with near to perfect answers plus mentioning the fact of this car being a Replica. They will receive the PrewarCar badge as well. Hope to see you all back for # 149 the Saturday after Easter. (photo by editor) It is a pre 1945 car. To be more precise the rear end of about the most un-rare car in the world. All we want to know of you is the make (1), the manufacturer (2) the year (3) & the type (4). No need to send long letters or stories. Just a neat listing of the above numbered questions. Have fun ! May the best competitor win. He or she will win the RoadMap/PreWarCar gillet. In case we have more then one winner, they will all receive the PreWarCar brass-enamel badge.
