What is it? # 152 ( Update: 1914 Steco )

UPDATE: # 152 was a nasty one. The develish pleasure was completely on our side. One competitor came up with: "1914 Malcolm, made by the Malcolm Jones Detroit Co., Detroit Mich. Other option is the Mercury from the Mercury Cyclecar Co., Detroit, Mich, also about 1914." Very interesting and surprisingly the year is spot on. The very few others that came up with an answer mostly produced Woods. Yet as many times before there was one man who just knew ! "This is a Steco Cycle car from 1914. The car is engineered by Stephens Engineering Co, Chicago and built by Universal Machinery Company. The price for this vehicle was 450 US$." Congratulations Verner Johnson from Denmark !! A well deserved win !

EARLIER: It is a US made car. Click the photo for another perspective and you probably will say Aha! or Ohoh... Both pictures come from an original hand-out that must be a very rare item, as we are not so sure that one specimen of this make was ever sold! Anyway here are some specs. The aircooled 45 degrees V-twin was designed by a well known Chicago automobile manufacturer. The carburettor is a Schebler Model H. Ignition Atwater-Kent. Power: 10 HP at 1500 rpm. Box: four speeds plus reverse with hydraulic operated pressed paper friction(!). Front springs: twin transverse directly connected to steering knuckles. Rear springs: two 38 inch Lanchester type cantelever. Equipment: Stewart Special Cyclecar Speedometer, fitted flush on dash, rear wheel drive.

We have one of the 5 original 1909-1912 Steco cars as listed above. 5 were to be built. Car #1 is a basket case, car #2 is now being built from parts of car #1. Cars 3-4-5 are in pieces. Other spare parts for the other 3 cars are in storage. They were packed away in 1914 at the outbreak of WWI in Maywood, IL and recovered in the 1990's with the ONE-OF-A-KIND 1911 Steco Aerohydroplane and a 1909 Gnome Omega rotary engine that is now in mint running condition. The car is powered by a Mack/Stephens motorcycle engine that we have running after being stored for over 100 years. We plan to restore the car to its original condition. The collection and work is being done is in St. Paul, MN.
