Quiz ArchiveWhat is it? # 79 (UPDATE) Many entries this time. And nobody came up with the wrong make. All shouted: Maybach ! Than only a few aded that the type letters SW stand for Swing-Achsen (swing axles), you can clearly se thee left rearwheel in an awkward angle as proof. But that was not the question. We just wanted the right type, which is SW 42, not SW 38 with the smaller 3,8 6 cylinder. Only two competitors came up with this right number , one wof which was unfortuinately far too late in with the answer. The coachwork is by, and here we cite Jon Baker (who gamled wrong fro SW 38):"Pullman Limousine with bodywork by Hermann Spohn Karosseriebau of Ravensburg. About 520 SW38s were produced between 1936 and 1939. Going on nothing more than the look of the front bumper, I would guess that this example dates from 1939 when this photo was taken. The rear doors were characterised by being able to swing through close on 180 degrees to lie near parrallel to the bodywork when fully open.
The six cylinder engine used drove the rear wheels through what is described as a "semi-automatic gearbox" controlled by two levers in the centre of the steering wheel (and a separate lever control located on the transmission tunnel for reverse).
The engine was initially available in 3.5 (model SW35) litre form and in its final form as the SW42 of 4197cc capacity. Production of all three of these models between 1935 to 1941 totalled a little less than 600 examples.."
Best answer was from Robin Gilbert of Scotland: "Maybach SW 42..." Congratulations, Robin! EARLIER TEXT: It is the left hand of the owner. Showing us the car that is in his ownership for decades: a full size limousine of an existing make. The year is 1939 and although the photo is far from perfect it betrays a lot of detail. To hint even more: as you can see the car is far from being a short wheel base. Still the type is a SW... We gave you enough to chew on for the moment. Please be specific on the Make and type of this car. Adding a little extra to make you stand out compared to the other competitors will not hurt.
