Quiz ArchiveWhat is it? # 95 ( UPDATE: 1902 (?) Dürkopp ) UPDATE: We had two very close competitors. One claiming it is a 2 cylinder, the other that it is probably a 4 cylinder. When researching this issue, a few important messages came in. Paul Linster of Luxembourg found on the Karmann website (see below) another photo of the same car: ".... you can well see a cardan-transmission. According to all my literature this replaced chain drive only in 1905 with the 3-cylinder model, constructed under
Belgium DASSE-licence.(spec. taxis)....!!! " Wayne Mikosz came up with even more: "I don't mean to obfuscate but Karmann coachwork did not come into being
until 1905. When Christian Klages died at the turn of the century Wilhelm
Karmann Sr. took over the business under the name "Wagon Factory Ch.
(Christian) Klages, Proprietor Wilhelm Karmann." (Source: Automobile
Quarterly, Volume 27, issue 3, page 243) It IS noted however that the first
"Karmann" coachwork fitted was for a Durkopp, built in Bielefeld (no
specific date given. I assume 1905) Also W. Karmann first showed his
coachwork in Berlin in 1905. This substantiates the dates. (AQ/27/3/245)" Based on the above material we decided Henk Visscher to be winner. He had the make right. He had the coachbuilder right. He also went into the question is it a 2 or 4 cylinder before we came up with that problem. Congratulations Henk! See you all next Saturday. (photo source www.Karmann.de .... ! ) EARLIER TEXT: It is a 1902 car. Ah!, something for the true specialists to chew on! This is one of the smaller European makes from a country with a solid reputation. The make existed from the late nineties untill 1927. In case we would give a clue about the make you would probably still don't have any grip on the issue. Better think about the coachwork. With what we give you plus some trivial automotive knowledge you on the way to prew-war glory. The coachbuilder is known till this day and has a vast crowd of fans. Even in the United States. Now you tell us: 1. the Make of car. 2. the Coachbuilder. 3. and maybe the Type.
