What is it ? # 99 (UPDATE: 1897 Lanchester )

Update: Only two competitors in this prewar car universe had the courage to send an answer for # 99 ! Only hours before the quiz we decided to take out the leather(?) dashboard as this is a very wellknown item on later Lanchesters. See this wellknown 1904 car at a Czech website(Auta5p.car.cz). One of the two answers came from jurymember Lars-Göran Lindgren. As jurymembers are not eligible to win, our choice was easy. Frequent contributor Bas de Voogd never came close to winning earlier, but now was better than anybody else with a very detailed answer: "It is the 1897 Lanchester No. 2. Body: A two Seated Phaeton. Built in Birmingham in the Lanchester Engine Comp's Armourer Mills factory, and in fact Frederic Lancaster's second prototype. It has a 2 cylinder 8 HP engine with low tension magneto ignition with mechanical make and break, contrary with its immediate predecessor Lancaster No 1 which still had coil and accumulator ignition. Cylinders which were air cooled were horizontally opposed and gave a bore /stroke of 127 x 137 mm. Capacity was huge with 3470 cc. Transmission has for this model year a leather to metal cone clutch introduced. the encased shafts of the live axle run on hardened steel roller bearings, and are fitted on ball thrusts." Congratulations Bas !!!

This Saturday no Quiz due to Rétromobile. See you all next week Saturday for # 100.......
(postcard Horwitz Collection) It's a monoposto with a nice bucket seat. Or is one seat taken out to give more visibility to the underlying technicalities? Presumably it's not that hard when you slept a little less than I did at school. Ahem....before forgetting this, we took out a piece of bodywork. Even to us here it looked to simple with that in the photo . Now to recognise this pre 1900 product you may click for an enlarged detail of the engine room. Please tell us the Make , the Year, and the Specs of the engine. Please send your answer before Monday 9 February to \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
