Who is it? # 149 (Update: John Cobb / 1935 / SS-Jaguar)

Update:Most of you were right: it is John Cobb who died in an attempt for a better speed record on water in 1952. His fastest pre-war land speed record was in 1939 at Bonneville Salt Flats when he was doing 326,7 MPH. In 1947 he even came close to 400 MPH in another of further developed Railton. See this homepage . As suggested in the quiz, we were talking about the year in which a make of car changed name 'halfway the thirties'. Well in fact were talking about 1935, the year SS changed its name into Jaguar. This photo was cut from a May 1935 advert appearing in The Motor presenting John Cobb in a testimonial for the SS Aerline Coupe. Only two men were spot one. Jury member Bas de Voogd and winner Jeffrey Vogel from the state of New York, USA. Congratulations Jeffrey !" Earlier text: It is an Englishman who liked to go fast. The faster the better. This picture is part of an advertisement for a make of car that changed their name somewhere halfway the thirties. They didn't build a lot of cars then, but they still exist and are quite succesfull. The reason this man was asked for the advert was obvious. He was famous and the manufacturer thought that it was good to associate the character of their cars with this man. He passed away in 1952, not of old age.

1. Who is this man?
2. What is the year?
3. What make of car are we talking about?

May the best competitor win...
