Press ReleasesThe Legend is Back on the Road2012 Mille Miglia: the Legend Is Back on the RoadOn May 17 “the world’s greatest road race” is off again: 382 classic cars to meet the thousand mile (1600 km) challenge from Brescia to Rome and back The engines are revving up at the Mille Miglia, as it returns to the roads of Italy from May 17 to 19, 2012. The greatest models in the history of cars will be shooting down the historic thousand mile route from Brescia to Rome and back – 1600 km crossing six regions of Italy (Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, and the Venice region), along with the Republic of San Marino and over 190 towns and villages which are among the most picturesque in Italy. An adventure that began 85 years, 1 month, and 22 days earlier. March 26, 1927. The date of the first of “the world’s greatest road race”, as Enzo Ferrari called it. Then there were 77 cars. Now, in 2012, there are 382. “In recent years,” declares Alessandro Casali, President of the Organizing Committee of the Mille Miglia, “the race has increased in fame and fascination. Confirming its continual success, requests for participation were so many this year that the Automobile Club of Brescia decided to make an exception and increase the number of available places from the traditional 375. This shows the work that we have put in during the last five years. The great deal of effort that we have made to relaunch the image of the Mille Miglia at world level – starting from the City of Brescia – and of its participants.” “In the year of the thirtieth anniversary of the revival,” explains Sandro Binelli, Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Mille Miglia, “we have cars that are truly exceptional from a quality point of view and also due to the celebrities who are participating. And not all come from abroad. In fact almost 60 of the cars this year have already raced a Mille Miglia of the past, one of the speed races held between 1927 and 1957. We will have an awe-inspiring 51 brands in the race this year. This variety has been made possible also thanks to the support given to the Mille Miglia by the impressive nine car-makers, who normally would be competing against each other, but for this event come together as our Joint Presenting Sponsors.” This year once again, the historic race can boast of a medal given to the race by the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, “as a token of the nation’s appreciation for this initiative, known throughout the world as an event of traditional Italian excellence, on its historic route which displays the beauty of the landscape of our country.” The route of the Mille Miglia, as Paolo Binelli, Vice-President of the Organizing Committee of the Mille Miglia, underlines, “seeks out new places each year to pay homage to the ancient roads of the race’s historic itinerary. This year’s new feature is the passage through Padua and Vicenza. But we will also return to Ferrara, repeat the crossing of San Marino, and will touch once again Verona, passing under its famous Arena. The cars will then face new time trials in Umbria on the way down, and other special tests in Tuscany on the way up.” Another new feature this race will be the stop for lunch at San Casciano Val di Pesa and a new record event to celebrate the thirtieth historical revival of the Mille Miglia. The date to remember is May 15. And the place is the piazza at the Brescia Trade Fairgrounds, where 375 classic cars which were not able to enter the Mille Miglia, will be arranged to create the official logo – the red arrow with “1000 miglia” written on it. All destined for a Guinness World Record. News, but above all, tradition. Just as in the last two races, the “jewels” of the road will be preceded once again by a parade of 140 Ferraris, both new and old, all paying homage to the Mille Miglia. But the leading players are always those beautiful cars, the classic cars in the race. Among this year’s gems is a Jaguar C-Type, which was the first to use disk brakes. To inaugurate the new technology,Stirling Moss was given the charge, with Norman Dewis. Moss broke the absolute speed record in 1955 by doing 1600 kilometers in 10 hours and 8 minutes. He will be at the Mille Miglia this year as well, leaving the starting line on Viale Venezia at the wheel of a 1953 Jaguar C-type once again with Dewis. Among other personalities in the race this year is Jochen Mass, the former Formula 1 racing car driver, who is a great fan of the Mille Miglia, in his legendary “gull wing” 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL W194 which turns 60 this year. Also at the starting line will last year’s winners, Giordano Mozzi and Stefania Biacca, who will be attempting to hold the title this year on board a 1938 Lancia Astura 1000 Miglia from the museum, Museo Nicolis di Villafranca, and 82 year old Enzo Baldi who raced in the Mille Miglia in1955.
Automotive Treasures at RM AuctionAUCTIONS AMERICA BY RM’s 2012 AUBURN SPRING AUCTION TO OFFER THECOMPANY’S LARGEST PRIVATE COLLECTION OF MEMORABILIA TO DATE
![]() AUBURN, Indiana (May 15, 2012) – The historic Auburn Auction Park in Auburn, Indiana, will become a giant treasure chest of automotive memorabilia June 1-3 when Auctions America by RM offers the largest private collection of high-quality scale models, fine art paintings, original signs and rare vintage mascots the auction company has ever consigned. In addition to the thousands of “automobilia” items, which will all sell to the highest bidders during the three-day Auburn Spring auction, more than 600 American muscle cars, Classics, foreign sports cars and hot rods will cross the block. “Automobilia is great fun for collectors whether their budgets are big or small,” said Auctions America by RM’s President Donnie Gould. “Some enthusiasts buy scale-model cars because they can’t afford the full-size versions; others buy them to put on a desk while the full-size version sits in the garage. Not everyone can afford a million-dollar 427 Cobra, but a well-made scale model might go for a few hundred dollars.” Model cars offered at Auburn Spring range from 1/24-scale Franklin Mint models in batches of five (est. $150 - $350) to a 1/8-scale Conti 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder (est. $10,000 - $15,000). A five-figure price tag for a model might seem like a lot, but it’s quite a bargain compared to the $10 million it would take to purchase one of the 10 full-size NARTs Ferrari built. The star of the collection is a Sapo Modelltechnik model of a 1913 Mercer 35J Raceabout with a 14.5-inch wheelbase and more than 3,000 individual parts. Considered one of the finest detailed models ever, the Mercer has been appraised at $18,000 to $25,000. Vintage airplane models such as a Pan Am jet airliner (est. $250 - $500) and World War II B-17 bomber (est. $500 - $1,000) will go to new hangars, and a 110-inch-wide recreation of Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis is expected to soar to an altitude between $2,500 and $5,000. Mascots, those chrome- and brass-plated sculptures that sit atop the radiator caps of vintage cars, are another category of great interest to automobilia collectors, and the Auburn Spring auction is offering some historically significant examples. Several different versions of Rolls-Royce’s Spirit of Ecstasy are expected to sell for between $300 and $500, a 1930s Duesenberg mascot is valued between $500 and $800 and appraisers expect an unusual aftermarket rooster mascot to fetch between $500 and $1,000. Several famous paintings by highly regarded automotive artists will be offered with no reserve at Auburn Spring. Tom Hale’s “Swan Mascot” (est. $3,000 - $5,000), Ken Eberts’ “Hershey” (est. $5,000 - $8,000) and Alfredo De la María’s “Rolls-Royce” (est. $7,000 - $10,000) are just a few of the framed originals that bidderswill eagerly seek. “The best thing about automobilia is that it doesn’t take up much room,” said Gould. You can enjoy a piece in your house or office when there’s no time to get to the garage and play with the big cars. Auctions America is really proud to have have consigned such a large, high-quality private collection.” The automobilia lots will cross the block on Friday at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday at 11:00. During the three-day auction, Carlisle Events will host the swap meet and car corral, which will feature hundreds of parts vendors and special-interest cars for sale. Tickets to the auction are $10 for a daily pass or $25 for a full event pass, and admission is free for the preview on Thursday, May 31. The auction runs Friday, June 1, through Sunday, June 3. Internet, absentee and telephone bidding options are available for those unable to attend the event in person. Full event details and a list of auction offerings are available online at www.auctionsamerica.com or by calling toll free 877-906-2437 (or +1 260-927-9797 outside North America).
