Stuttgart's Muscle Saloon

300_SEL_6.3Spotted between Stuttgart and Franfurt this very well maintained fresh "6.3 litre". Most will overlook the understated long legged distance killer. Insiders will spot the "6.3" from far as the same engine as used in the stateman's 600 but now used in the much lighter 300SEL, basically the same car as a 280 SE. Primarily meant for the V8 hungry US market the guzzler saloon has become Merc's proverbial wolf in sheeps clothing. For those who still find the 300 SEL 6.3  a bit modest, the next model gave even better numbers...:  450SEL 6.9 litre.

The Dinky Mystery Boxes

dinky-holland-1A question from Hugh Stiles: “In a toy car Forum, we're trying to work out why some Dinky Toys appear to have been sold in The Netherlands in non-standard boxes. The trail leads back to 1933 and a company called G. S. Miller Co's Automotief Producten NV, Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal 120 in Amsterdam. Being Dutch and involved with pre-war cars, have you ever heard of this firm? Have you any idea what they sold? Do you know what became of them? I know it's a bit of a long shot but we're running out of options, but any help will be most gratefully received.”
The picture of the Mobilgas truck immediately got editor RB to dig up his own well played with example. We don’t know about the boxes though. Can you help? Add your comment!

93 year young Healey Fan

KAM-John-Lore-4Approximately 70 members from the St. Louis Austin-Healey Club and guests were present at the recent Austin-Healey Showcase open house event at the Kemp Auto Museum on Sunday, 3/14/10.

Not only did the members talk with the guests about their collector automobiles, which are part of an Austin-Healey exhibition currently on display at the Kemp Auto Museum through April 4th - many members let guests go "behind the ropes", popped open the car hoods and allowed them to get up close and personal with the cars.

The afternoon's main highlight was long-time St. Louis Club member Sonny Tough, 93 years young, who answered questions about his car and related stories about his love affair with Austin-Healey automobiles!

Same mess, different year

basel-frontier-1Traffic jams are not only today's problem. Just have a look at this fine mess waiting to cross the frontier near Basel in Switzerland. At first sight all cars look French, although we could also spot an Opel Rekord, a Mercedes-Benz 170 en a very early VW. But we have trouble recognizing the sports car with the girl standing in it. Our first thoughts are Delahaye, Delage or maybe even a Bugatti? Do you know? Then tell us! (postcard collection Karel Vermeer, with thanks to Eduard Hattuma)
