The Road Marking Mystery
(UPDATE III: VW Kubelwagen ?)

Recently Harit from India purchased a set of pictures related to the Indian Police. The lot contains one photo of a road marking machine designed by DPR in Mumbai. The caption with the photot says that an old chassis was used, which looks prewar to us. On the back of the photo is some text telling us that the German Embassy in India arranged for a Dr. Gobert, dipl. ing, of Ms Gobert Fritz GmbH to check this machine. The text also says that the photo was taken on Bombay Juhu Road, but this seems unlikely because in the background there is a Ford Taunus whizzing by. As there were probably only two of these known in Mumbai, we feel that the picture was not taken in India but probably in Germany. Does the roadmarker have a pre-war chassis? And can you tell us more about Gobert Fritz GmbH? Do they still exist? Mail us!

Update III by Cristian: "I think that the only base as a pre-war car for the road maintain vechicle could be the Volkswagen type Kubelwagen. Clues:
1. the engine is in the back
2. the car wing + front lights looks original (They used the frontal part of the car ! )
3. the driver looks more european than indian."
Update II from Matt Dudenhoeffer: "It looks like the frame is backward. The rear is now the front and the front the rear."
Update I by Dick Trenk: ”In the photo I see a custom made box frame providing the driver a view of the road and spray nozzles. There is nothing seen which shows a link with some pre-war car frame. The drive wheels and engine unit appear to be at the rear. The remainder of the spraying devices such as hoses, compressed air tank, paint storage etc. are all contemporary with that time period and nothing prewar is to be seen.”
