The Seattle Mystery (UPDATE VIII: Speedwell with Presto-lite starter and House also identified!)
Seattle is nicknamed ’the Emerald City’ because of the green forests that surround it. Its inhabitants are proud of the city’s heritage. Jess Cliffe is one of them. He runs the blog Vintage Seattle and is asking our help in identifying both the car and house with number # 102. If you can tell us where the house stands (or stood) in Seattle we’d be very surprised, as we have more confidence in your knowledge of cars. A good look at the radiator might help to identify what kind of automobile this obviously well-to-do family of three is driving. And do you know what the use of the cannister on the sideboard was? Mail us your suggestions!
Update VIII by editor RB: We never believed it possible, but one of our readers also identified the house, as it belong to his great-uncle. However, due to the age of the occupant, we will not disclose its location, although we did of course pass on the information to the Vintage Seattle blog.
Update VII by Edward LaBounty: "It's a 1912 Speedwell model 12HS 4 passenger Tourest; the a presto-lite tank is retained as this car has the optional electric headlights but was equipped with (a no cost option) the Presto-lite acetylene self starter. My reference is the fact that I own the same type car equipped with gas headlights. The box at the rear of the running board is to cover the spring ends and you can see the small door for accessing the grease fitting."
Update VI by Jinn Marie Davis: “1911 Speedwell model d touring series 11, 121 wb 50 hp.”
Update V by Kit Foster: “The car looks very much like the 1912 Stevens-Duryea in The Standard Catalog .”
Update IV from Layden Butler: “…1912 Speedwell. The canister is the carbide gas (acetylene) tank used to power the headlamps.”
Update III by Hugh Nutting: “…1912 Olds Autocrat series. The hubcaps are a tip-off. It has Grey&Davis electric headlights and a Prestolite tank - may have had the 1913/14 up-grade.”
Update II by Mark Morton: “canister for Prest-o-Lite gas for headlights”
Update I by Keith Kuehn: “the Tank on the running board is a Prestolite tank, holding acytelene gas for the headlights. I'll guess the car has chain drive, because of the square covers on the running boards right in front of the rear wings. As far as make, I may venture a guess as a Simplex, 1912 to 1914.
Location of the house is a bigger problem, as my cousins out there have no idea. As it looks to be a well to do home, I'd also venture to say it has a very good chance of still being there though, unless being razed for freeways, hospital expansion.”
