The Mille Miglia Mystery (UPDATE IV: Peugeot)
A lovely smile will get you everywhere. Especially straight to the front page of PreWarCar! However we are not concerned with smiles today. Let’s concentrate on the car (click the picture for an enlargement). The picture was sent to us by William Calef, who thinks it is a Bugatti that belonged to his father Giuseppi Calef. The story goes that he entered it in the Mille Miglia, but that en-route a wheel came off -probably a broken stub axle- so he obviously did not finish. But after studying the photo we are quite sure that this is not a Bugatti, but then, what can it be? Perhaps the radiator and distinctive mascot can be a clue? And do you know something about its Mille Miglia history? Enlighten us!
Update IV again by Tony Hancock: "If it isn't the 172BS - see page 100 of "Toutes les Peugeot" by Rene Bellu, then it is definitely a 1925 Type 172R - see page 49 of "Peugeot l'aventure Automobile" by Dominique Pagneux
Update III from Tony Haycock: “… looks very much like a 1924 Peugeot Quadrilette Grand Sport type 172BS.”
Update II by Marc Fellman: “From the style of the disk wheels, bonnet louvres, position of the headlamps and possibly the radiator I would guess a 5HP Benjamin of around 1924-25. The mascot seems to me to be an aftermarket item and not specific to a particular marque.”
Update I by Richard Armstrong: “Pretty sure that's an Amilcar. Here’s a remarkably similar Amilcar, complete with a slightly different mascot. But I'd guess both mascots are probably after-market additions.”
