About quiz # 230: 1933 RR with body by Jean Gygax
When we say a quiz is nice and simple, do not trust us! One clue we gave you was to look for cheese, chocolate and Alps, thus the location of the coachbuilder had clearly to be Switzerland. However, that clue didn’t narrow the possibilities, as Mark Dawber wrote: “I didn't realise that there were so many Swiss coachbuilders until I researched this one.” In fact this attractive two-door body was made by Jean Gygax who worked in Biel/Bienne, on a 1933 Rolls Royce 20-25. It was featured in Autocar in 1933 and later in the RROC handbook (1964 edition, page 100). The RR now resides in the USA. Those that mentioned Jean Gygax as the coachbuilder were not only jury members Paul Linster and Dick Trenk, but also Kevin Metcalfe; Marc Fellman; John Wilson; Walter Mahrer and Phil Cordery. But as we also asked you to name the model and year of this RR, we elected John Wilson for his very complete answer. Congratulations, John! (Our thanks to Anton van Luijk for the photos) (RB)
