1910 Chalmers-Detroit
Not a Houpt-Rockwell, not a Flyabout, not a Columbia and not a Hudson. Although this last one was close as Hudson builders Roy Chapin and Howard Coffin had been previously involved with Chalmers-Detroit. We thought we had given you some good clues to work with, especially the one about how well you read PreWarCar, yet only four contestants identified our quiz car correctly: Luke Chennell, Hugh Nutting, Jinn Marie Davis and Gaurav Sawant. But only Luke Chennell had the model right as he wrote: “The car in question is a 1910 Chalmers-Detroit Model "40" Pony Tonneau, wheelbase 122", under restoration by John Rehberg. The engine in the "40" was a joint venture between a British and American company, and produced what some have called essentially a "hot rod". The Detroit suffix was dropped from the Chalmers name in 1911. Hugh Chalmers was previously president of the National Cash Register Company. Incidentally, during his tenure at NCR his employee Charles Kettering got the idea for his self-starter, but Chalmers would not be able to license and add the device to their cars until 1913.” Congratulations Luke on your first win!
