The Fischer Mystery (UPDATES: 1904, 1905,1907..& more)

In the family archive Fredi Vollenweider found a picture taken by his great-grandfather nearly 100 years ago. The picture is signed 'Gebrüder Bodmer 1915' meaning Bodmer brothers. The car is a Swiss made Fischer. Fischer cars were built between 1908 and 1914 in Zürich but today very little is known about this manufacturer. Only about 200 cars were built and the one(?) surviving car is exposed at the Verkehrshaus in Lucerne. Fredi wonders if possibly one of the readers of PreWarCar can shed some more light on the history of Fischer, or maybe knows about another surviving car?

Does anyone still have an engine and gearbox or other parts of the period 1913-14 with sleeve valves and a planetary transmission?

Kind regards,
Giel

I do have parts of the original archives of the Fischer family and the TURICUM company. This plate "744C" was 1923 still registered for Hans Bodmer, Reisender, Forch (merchant, Forch near Zurich) and the car should be a FISCHER 1911. The foto tells me, that it is an early 1911 with "normal" engine and FRICTION DRIVE.
Later in 1911, they changed to Fischer's internal gear selective transmission, they also changed the radiator outlook (to oval) and the engine (new FISCHER slide valve engine, like in the Museum Lucerne). The total production of FISCHER WAGEN was about 300-400. In the Museum of Transportation at Lucerne, you can find a complete slide valve Fischer 1914 and a cut away model slide valve. I do have an "old" type engine, a used an a NOS internal gear trans. If you have any questions, just get in touch with me.

Much more information about Fischer and Turicum can be found in the Swiss book: Schweizer Autos by Ernest Schmid published in 1978 by Auto-Jahr, Edita SA Lausanne. ISBN 2-88001-058-6

Martin Fischer first produced a pedal steered, motor cycle engine powered car, with chain drive, in 1904, then next with Friction drive (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turicum) , then later with conventional set-up.
These were manufactured under the “Turicum” brand., from 1904 to 1907, when he left.
Turicum continued to make cars and export them around Europe.
According to the Swiss car register, http://www.swisscarregister.ch/en/a_fahrzeug.html#fischer
Fischer continued producing Turicum type cars until 1914.
“Production of improved four-cylinder Turicum vehicles. The special planetary transmission and his own sleeve valve engine were also produced under license abroad. A chassis and a torpedo are exhibited at the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne.” which I presume is the one mentioned in your article.

I own an original Patent Document issued to Fischer dated 24 November 1905 regarding steering a car with the drivers feet.
And there was an articcle published 2001 in the Neue Zuercher Zeitung called "A car named Zuerich" (Turicum).
If Fredi Vollenweider contacts me by email I can send him copies.Regards Jean-Pierre Mueller
