While we are sitting under the Tuscan sun, we look back at the first couple of days of the Mille Miglia 2022, and we are happy to say that it didn’t disappoint so far. Last night, the cars arrived to Rome in style. We spoke to a couple of teams, who ― despite their tiredness ― were gleaming with joy. Wow! What a day! The organisation’s slogan is “the most beautiful race in the world”, and we happily agree with this statement. The cars, the scenery, and especially the Italian spectators at the side of the road, make for a fantastic event.

The starting point was in Brescia. When we arrived on Monday morning, the race was everywhere. The whole town was ready for the MM. Every store had little MM flags, restaurants offered MM menus, and the first cars were parked on the road - like it was 1934 again. We went to a store, and accidentally jumped the queue… but as soon as the cashier looked at our MM tag, sense of their heritage took over, and we were treated as VIPs.

The first days revolved around scrutinising and final registration, which ― after COVID ― once again took place in the Brixia forum. The mechanics were especially busy. I am always surprised that some of the cars still need so much maintenance during the last days, even though they were fully “prepared” before the race.

After the cars got approved by the organisation ― which is a film scene in itself; one of the cars put an English registration on top of the Italian one, and had to take it off ― we got our first experience of Italian dolce vita. The police escorted the cars to the Piazza della Vittoria, where a small MM pop-up town was set up and where the sealing ceremony took place.

The start took place on Wednesday in a simmering hot Viale Venezia. When the PreWarCars took off, it was very crowded. However, due to the hot weather, people were soon searching for the shade, and even more important, refreshing cold drinks. It really had no effect on the atmosphere, as everybody was equally excited for the 2022 edition.

Ancient towns, beautiful scenery, and extremely enthusiastic people, were the ingredients for the next couple of fantastic days. Still very hot, but at last, some rain fell in the beginning of the evening. Yesterday evening, the cars finished at the eternal city. Today, the cars will reach Sienna by lunchtime, and Parma for the finish.

We will continue to take photos and share it on PreWarCar.com and PostWarClassic.com.

Enjoy.

It is important to note that the present Mille Miglia is not a race but a time trial.
