130 years young and still as popular as ever: The London to Brighton Run

For 130 years, the legendary London to Brighton Run has drawn enthusiasts of historic vehicles from around the world. What began as a defining moment in the history of mobility has grown into an annual spectacle with international appeal.

The origins of the event lie in the so-called Emancipation Run of November 1896 – exactly 130 years ago this year. This drive marked the end of the horse-drawn era and celebrated a major milestone: the introduction of the British Light Locomotives Act. This raised the speed limit for cars from 4 mph (6 km/h) to 14 mph (23 km/h) and abolished the requirement for a person to walk ahead of the vehicle carrying a red flag.

During this historic celebration, early motorists travelled en masse from London to Brighton. In doing so, they not only created a tradition but also marked the beginning of modern motoring in Great Britain. To this day, the Run follows almost exactly the same route, paying tribute to that pivotal moment.

This year, the event returns once again – and registration is now open. Participants who register before Wednesday 17 June can benefit from an early bird discount. Additional advantages are offered to owners of the oldest vehicles (pre-1900), as well as to three-wheelers and veteran motorcycles from the pioneering days of motoring.

To add even more colour to the event, organisers once again welcome a select number of brave participants on historic bicycles, including iconic machines such as the penny-farthing, ensuring a striking presence along the route.
