Seeking Information on 1904 Columbia Mark XLIII Rear Entrance Tonneau

Letters to the editor

Recently acquired, this 1904 Columbia Mark XLIII Rear Entrance Tonneau was beautifully restored about 25 years ago but has not been driven since. It is powered by a gasoline 2-cylinder engine, with a 3-speed transmission and shaft drive.

I would like to connect with anyone who owns, or has owned, one of these cars and would be willing to share their knowledge with me.  So far, my initial questions include the following:

  • what type of oil should be used in the clutch?
  • is there a way to test that the "automatic lubricating system"  (for the engine) is actually working?
  • how does the governor work in actual driving use?

I'd also like to find out any information about the history of this car, which was once owned by Joe Beers in Bangor, Pennsylvania, USA.

I am looking forward to being the first person to drive this car in perhaps 100 years.
