Wanted: the right tires for fabulous HPOF 1910 Reo

The car has 27 inch rims, and according to period literature was sold with Michelin tires new. Greg, owner of car, is trying to keep period correct, thus the search for "correct" tires. The jack is called a "tire saver", and one on each hub "saves" the tires if car is stored, for example during the winter, preventing flat spots. It's a one-lever affair that with one motion lifts that wheel off the ground....

I have an interest in the recently produced, early style Michelin Beaded Edge/Clincher tyres, particularly in the past 30 or so years. These seem to be only be available for a short period of time. If these 860 x 85 tyres were available 15 years ago, I'm assuming the tyre moulds are still around, somewhere? Does anyone know if these were made by Michelin, or someone else? is there any chance of them being remade, either for a motorcycle or car? I have a friend who bought some smaller sized Michelin motorcycle beaded edge tyres, with the same tread pattern as this REO, years ago. They were marked 'Made in France', but, I haven't been able to find these pattern tyres since.

I looked in an old book " gasoline Automobiles" from the period, and they say that 860 x 85 is interchangeable with 870 x 90, and also 34 x 3 and 34 x 3 1/2. Having said that, it looks like Universal only carries 34 x 4 which has a 3 1/2 inch tread width.

Forgot to add, why are you looking for beaded edge tyres, this car clearly has a 2 bead locking ring system, for straight sided tyres, 36" X $ & 1/2" , beaded edge tyres fit into a rounded recess in the wheel rim,

I have the exact same model &am familiar with the wheel locking rings, In fact I have had to remove all the paint from these to get them to sit within each other correctly, my wheels have 36"X 4&1/2" tyres on 27"Rims, I have many spares for this model if required. wish mine looked like this, mine is all brand new powder coated everything , am pleased to see that america is waking up to the origionality of cars, & leaving them as is,

Odd to see metric size tyres on a US car, assuming it is in the US. I have not seen that size before. The approximate conversion would be 34 x 3 1/2 on a 27" rim. I know Weston Mott did both metric and imperial rims sizes as I had some of each with a Buick project many years ago - they were 895 x 105 (metric) and 34 x 4 - but I had assumed the metric ones were for export.

That looks like a Model R. Bob Dluhy's _Automobiles of the Brass Era_ (McFarland, 2013) says they should be 34 x 3-1/2. Brand not specified.

In 1910 the Reo had a 112 in (2845 mm) wheelbase, and 32 inch (81 cm) wheels, (according to Wiki)
Not bad if this is only the second set of tyres !

I wonder if these are the right size tires for the car. For an American car, would not a 34 x 3.5 be more of a suspected size? Was this car made for export? I have a car that came with 880 x 120 tires, but I have never heard of 860 x 85.. but I learn something new every day.

I'd love to know more about the curious device that appears in the first photo. Looks as if it holds the wheel and tyre off the ground?
