1933 Plymouth PC mystery roadster

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

I hope PreWarCar can help us to find out what coachwork is put upon this 1933 Plymouth PCXX-chassis. The car took part in the 2014 Circuit des Ardennes. It is right-hand drive, but the cars built in the UK are sold under the Chrysler name (Kew 6). It looks like this car has a coachbuilder’s plate fitted behind the front fenders.

Can anybody help?

All the best,

Job

I've known of this car for 22 years; from what I can gather the car was built in Australia but it's unknown to me if it's a Holden body or a T. J. Richards body. The manufacturer's serial number plate is missing but it has a PC series motor. Because the serial number is missing, Chrysler is unable to trace it in their records. It was originally listed as belonging to Graham Coleman of Dinsmore, Queensland, Australia. The last reference to ownership that I have is Erwin Blohmer of Gernsbach, Germany. No roadsters were built in the U.S.A. or Canada in 1933, only convertibles. It's possible it may have been built using leftover 1932 PB components. Certain styling features point out that it is a PCXX, which was produced after the restyled (in the U.S.A.) PD series came into the line in the spring of 1933.

Looks to be an Australian-bodied Plymouth, which had subtle differences from North American ones. The windscreen posts give it away for me. Unless using full custom bodywork, export American cars were either made in the U.S. or Canada, including bodies. The exception was Australia, which had an up-to-date body-building industry and government policies against built-up cars and bodywork being imported. They even made sedans but many cars were tourers and roadsters with bodies by T. J. Richards amongst others for Chrysler.

I see it is RHD, so it could be a Canadian built car for Empire export.

Hi.
The car body seems to be a original built Plymouth PD convertible. However there are differences,The windshield posts on the -33 was folding down over the hood. This car seems to have windshield opening in the lower part..The headlamps are different from original. The doors had roll up windows. This car has side courtains.
My guess is that this car has been built in either South Africa , Australia or south America as cars assembeld at plants outside the US often had differeces from the original.
