APRIL FOOL! A significant problem for the classic car enthusiast; cars registered in the UK after 1973 are not allowed on the road anymore

Brexit is keeping us all busy: constitutional requirements, article 50, another referendum, a "hard/clean" Brexit or a "soft" Brexit... With all the different opinions and interests, the future is uncertain. Do you think it is possible to predict what is coming, so we can anticipate and take action before it is too late? One way or another we are all directly or indirectly involved in this whole Brexit thing. Earlier we already published an article about how it would affect our hobby. But after that, we received new information that will cause significant problems in the whole car industry...

Cars that have been imported in the United Kingdom (from the European Union) and put on UK registration in the time that it was part of the EU (so from 1973 till now), will lose their registration and cannot drive legally on the road anymore. This will mean a significant problem for many of us, as many cars have been brought to the UK from mainland Europe.

PreWarCars and PostWarClassics that are registered before 1973 are "safe", just as cars imported from non-EU countries. BUT if you, for instance, bought a secondhand car from France 5 years ago and registered it, this will mean your earlier registration will not be valid anymore. Most likely you have to register the car again, but will the old French documentation still be helpful? We don’t know. We have asked the PR manager of the UK Government and the EU for more information, but they said that they cannot give any information about the details.

We do hope there will be a solution and otherwise, you are all welcome to list your cars at PreWarCar.com!

You are right guys - it is April Fools' Day!

It's April's fools day, but I don't think this is funny at all. The EU wants to regulate and ban everything. It is an organisation does not believe in individual liberty. Latest case in point is their directive to make automatic speed limiters in cars mandatory by 2022. Eventually, the EU will ban all cars which do not allow the government to take control of your vehicle - they will not allow a loophole that gives the people a way to escape. The EU will ban classic cars eventually, mark my words.

I know there are many classic car enthusiasts on the continent, but classic cars are nowhere near as much part of the national ethos on the continent as it is Britain. Brexit ensures that Britain will remain a safe haven for classic car owners into the foreseeable future. It should be supported by classic car enthusiasts all over Europe, even outside the UK, for it ensures that if classic car are banned on the continent, enthusiastic owners will always have the option of voting with their feet and moving to Britain. But if the EU is allowed to "harmonize" (their favourite word) regulations all across Europe, than all bets are off. I frankly do not see why any classic car enthusiast in his/her right mind would support the EU.

Oh god, does it apply vice verse too. As I thought it will be difficult to buy a British car in the future, taxes customs etc, I bought aBritish car just a few days ago.
So what to do? I suggest a swapmeet at the border of Ireland and Northern Ireland wher we can swap British with European cars and vice versa.
Maybe you can organize it and the Irish Tourist Board will help, too.d

The EU commission advises British owners of imported cars from the post-1973 period to sell their cars to enthusiasts on the continent with substantial discounts. Very popular are open two-seaters.
